Eldorado
Gaîment accoutré, un galant chevalier, au soleil et par les ténèbres, avait longtemps voyagé, chantant une chanson, à la recherche de l'Eldorado.
Mais il se fit vieux, ce chevalier si hardi, et sur son coeur le soir tomba, comme il ne trouvait aucun endroit de la terre qui ressemblât à l'Eldorado.
Et, quand sa force défaillit à la longue, il rencontra une ombre pèlerine. - " Ombre, dit-il, où peut être cette terre d'Eldorado ? "
- " Par delà les montagnes de la lune, et au fond de la vallée de l'ombre, chevauche hardiment, répondit l'ombre, - si tu cherches l'Eldorado. "
ELDORADO
GAILY bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old --
This knight so bold --
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell, as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow --
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be --
This land of Eldorado?"
"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied, --
"If you seek for Eldorado!"
